Role
DESIGN
Merzifon is a strategically located district with immense potential due to its intersection of roads to the Black Sea and Central Anatolia. Its fertile lands, historical significance, and industrial activities make it a unique production and trade center. However, the district also faces challenges such as unemployment, lack of social and cultural areas, and youth migration. To address these issues, our approach focused on producing solutions tailored to the specific location before designing the building. We envisioned creating interconnected centers throughout the city, forming a network of spaces that offer answers to the district's challenges. By integrating various programs into these spaces, we aimed to foster a collaborative effort in developing a shared vision for Merzifon's sustainable future. At the heart of the design lies a central courtyard, encircled by streets and passages, forming a welcoming gateway from multiple directions. The bazaar, beginning with artisan shops and restaurants on the ground floor, extends to an upper level, featuring shops, public units, a movie theater, and a restaurant. Versatile green terrace areas are integrated vertically, offering spaces for various purposes throughout the year.
An amphitheater serves as a recreation area, linking the upper bazaar to the main courtyard. An additional amphitheater on the southeast façade provides an alternative activity space. The third, fourth and upper roof terrace areas serve as public event spaces, seamlessly extending the vibrant street atmosphere. The lower ground level houses the living center, multi-purpose hall, and exhibition area, fostering production, education, and gatherings. The design incorporates local materials and sustainable features, such as water collection from sloping roofs and harnessing energy from wind and sun. Energy efficiency is prioritized through a smartly designed shell on the building's exterior façades. This shield blocks vertical sun rays in the summer, keeping the interior cool, while welcoming horizontal sun rays in winter for natural heating.
